It’s a rare treat to be able to design the ceramics you use everyday. You get to consider everything from proportion to form to glazes and see the collection come to life. Well, that is exactly what we got to do when designing our Stour Dinnerware Collection, and the result (in our opinion) is simple (but perfect).

The Stour is a river whose source is in Wiltshire, England. Our Stour dinnerware was inspired by the river’s bends and its beautiful surroundings.

Every piece has been considered individually, with an emphasis on organic shape and functionality, making them simultaneously elegant and informal.

Our two clean finishes- a matte white and glossy grey, show off food beautifully and are both dishwasher and microwave safe. We love to mix the sets when throwing a dinner party, including the coordinating Stour serving pieces.

Let there be light

As we crawl out of our seemingly endless winter hibernation, naturally we begin to consider and long for more light. Whether the soft glow of a wooden desk lamp or the bright focus of hanging pendants, we at canvas agree - the more light the better!

That’s why we’ve introduced some great options- Our Curvy Bottom lamp has a clean mid-century feel and works perfectly in offices, bedrooms and on side tables. Created from repurposed walnut off-cuts, each lamp is handmade in Ohio by Amish woodworkers and given a light oil finish. We love the warmth these lamps create!

In need of some stylish spot lighting? What kitchen or living room wouldn’t want our earthenware Mila pendants hanging around? With a matte white glaze and focused light, our locally made ceramic pendants get the job done and look great doing it. The pleasing shape hides the less than pretty (but very necessary) florescent pig-tail light bulbs. Luckily, the soft light that bounces off the white glaze gives the warmest quality light since we stopped using the Edison light bulb (a day we lament for loss of character, but welcome for the improvements to the environment). Hang the Mila individually or grouped together for more coverage. Our favorite use? Gathered in a trio to help illuminate those lonely reading corners!

In need of a freshen up? When a simple spring cleaning isn’t doing the trick, we always turn to our hand-dyed linen collection to brighten up the home. Woven by a cooperative in Kerela, India using a traditional 19th century european weave, our luxurious linens are perfect for any room in the home. Available in six colors (with a new Heather color on the horizon) the loose yardage is ideal for custom slip covers, tablecloths or drapes. We even use it for our upholstery pieces!

Our favorite use? Canvas’ linen pillow collection. Made from our linen yardage, they are soft enough to cuddle up with, yet the sturdy weave holds up to use as seat and floor cushions.

And let’s not forget our beloved pooches- canvas’ linen dog beds are just the cozy cushion they have been dreaming of…

Well, it’s the end of a busy buying season! With the launch of both the canvas website and canvas store this past year, we’ve made it our mission to introduce lots of fresh new products from our favorite makers for Spring. Some of the finds we are most excited about this season- beautifully washed linen napkins and tablecloths from Lithuanian based LinenMe, scrumptious lip balms and body oils from Jao Ltd (formulated without dyes, petroleum or artifical fragrances), simply darling screen-printed tea towels from Poppy Treffry in the UK, and sturdy everyday ceramic teapots from Metropolitan Tea Co.

We can’t wait to get all the new products in. One more reason to look forward to Spring!

Why not something playful for Valentine’s Day?

One of our favourite things in the world is handmade felt. Such an amazing material - it’s completely water proof and very durable. It also takes colour in a really unique way. For us it’s one of the best ways to get a strong splash of colour into your world. We go to Nepal for most of our felt product where are makers are all Fair Trade certified. Also the craft sector is one of the two big industries up there (along with tourism) and it’s great to support it as much as possible. Plus a lot of wool used come from remnants and off cuts from rug makers (the other big industry there) - a great repurposing of what would be waste. So we’ve come up with some really fun new felt products in bold and playful reds, perfect for your special Valentine.

We have always been big fans of the artisans of Haiti…

In 2008, when Aid To Artisans was partnering with several amazing groups in Haiti working in a range of materials, including soap stone and papier mache (from recycled cement bags), we immediately thought, “What could we make with these materials?”. It may have been counter-intuitive, but we came up with a stool, a waste paper basket – and have a series of office products under development (including a desk). We also used the same soap stone forcandle sticks and simple dishes. What’s incredible about the skill of these artisans is that virtually all their work is done without the use of electric tools – hand made in the purest sense.

Then in early 2010, the earthquake came, and needless to say these artisan groups came upon some really tough times… they lost their workshops, they lost their homes and in many cases members of their family. But they’ve managed to pull it all back together and we were receiving shipments just six months after the disaster, and it means a lot to us. So we are extremely happy to be able to offer these beautiful carved hearts to you and the proceeds back to artisans in Haiti.

His collection has been so successful, he recently opened a store in SoHo, New York with over 300 products all with a sustainable or ethical bent.

Impossible to feature all the beautiful wares we love here, so we selected one of our favorites: theStour Dining Collection.

The collection of dinner ware was inspired by the Stour river’s bends and gorgeous surroundings in Wiltshire, England. Every piece is hand made and emphasizes organic shapes.

The set comes in three colors: matte white, glossy grey and matte black, which are most striking when mixed and matched.

LOST IN THE WOODS

Every now and then I stumble into (okay, accidentally “˜click’ into) a store that I love. I mean, really love. Today I will share one of these rare little shops with you; a delectable petite boutique in New York – Canvas. Felt, ceramics, glass, textiles, and wooden delights begging to live under your roof.

I have been dreaming of a reclaimed and salvaged wood hand-made butcher block counter for (literally) years. Until I get better acquainted with power tools (oh, and actually own a counter) – here’s a gathering of natural wood charms to hold me over. I got completely lost in the gorgeous cellulose commodities at Canvas, a beautiful place to rest the eyes. Infuse a little earth, nature, and warmth into your kitchen with the beautiful products above.

ALL PHOTOS: Canvas Home Store

I’m just emerging from a pretty intense week of work (combined with finishing my entry for the Goodwill Reinvention Convention… another story). Somewhere (?) along the line I discovered this fabulous new home goods store, since I left myself a link in my blog ideas folder. Now that I have time to really soak it in, Canvas has me hooked.

It’s a home store that carries sustainable products made by artisans and craftsmen from the US and around the world. In their words: “Canvas is a journey around the globe that combines natural materials with interesting textures. Unstructured, soft shapes and subtle colours define a look that is understated yet elegant. With a continued pursuit of products made under fair trade and green principles, we aim for a collection that represents simple, sustainable style.”
